Spacecraft
Soyuz 7K-L1 No.2 (Soyuz 7K-L1 #2)
The Soyuz 7K-L1 "Zond" spacecraft was designed to launch men from the Earth to circle the Moon without going into lunar orbit in the context of the Soviet crewed Moon-flyby program in the Moon race. It was based on the Soyuz 7K-OK.
- Destination: Elliptical Earth Orbit
- Mission length: 7 days 12 hours
The Soyuz 7K-L1 spacecraft was sent on a no-return deep space trajectory.

About this launch
Kosmos 146 was an uncrewed Soyuz 7K-L1P prototype of the Zond circumlunar spacecraft, launched on the first Proton-K with the Blok D upper stage. The Blok D performed its burns correctly and boosted the craft into a planned high elliptical orbit; no recovery was attempted.
