About this launch

Zond L1S-2 was the 7K-L1S spacecraft on the second N1 launch (vehicle 5L), intended to enter lunar orbit and photograph candidate landing sites. Moments after liftoff the first stage shut down and the rocket fell back onto the pad in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history; the capsule was saved by the escape system.
