About this launch
Zond 7 was an uncrewed Soyuz 7K-L1 that flew around the Moon at about 1,985 km, returned colour photographs of Earth and the Moon, and carried tortoises and a radiation-dosimetry phantom. It made a guided skip reentry and landed in Kazakhstan, the only Zond flight that would have been fully safe for a crew.
