About this launch

Ranger 2 was the second NASA engineering test of the Ranger spacecraft, intended for a highly elliptical orbit far beyond the Moon's distance to check its systems and fields-and-particles instruments. A failed roll gyro cost the Agena its attitude control and the restart burn lasted only a second, leaving the probe in a low orbit from which it reentered after a day.
