Summary

Kosmos 140 launched on a Soviet Space Program Soyuz from 1/5, Baikonur Cosmodrome, Republic of Kazakhstan on February 7, 1967. It was Soviet Space Program's 218th launch, 3rd this year and humanity's 659th orbital launch attempt. It was the 3rd Soyuz flight and the 1st this year. The payload was bound for low Earth orbit (LEO). Kosmos-140, one of 2 catalogued objects, reached a 164 × 236 km orbit inclined 51.7°. The spacecraft was Soyuz 7K-OK No.3 (Soyuz 7K-OK (P) 11F615 #3). 2 objects from this launch are catalogued, one of them a payload.

Spacecraft

Soyuz 7K-OK No.3 (Soyuz 7K-OK (P) 11F615 #3)

First generation Soyuz used for a test flight.

  • Destination: Low Earth Orbit
  • Mission length: 1 day 20 hours

The Soyuz 7K-OK spacecraft reentered with a steeper trajectory than planned, leading to lethal conditions but a recoverable landing in the Aral Sea.

About this launch

Kosmos 140 was the third uncrewed test of the Soyuz 7K-OK spacecraft. It suffered attitude-control problems in orbit and a steep reentry that burned a hole in the heat shield; the capsule landed on the frozen Aral Sea, broke through the ice and sank, but the flight was judged good enough to proceed toward crewed missions.
