Launch Failure

Summary

INSAT-4CR launched on an Indian Space Research Organization GSLV from Satish Dhawan Space Centre Second Launch Pad, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, India on September 2, 2007. The mission failed: Error in guidance subsystem caused low apogee and high inclination. Payload reached correct orbit on its own power. It was Indian Space Research Organization's 24th launch, 3rd this year and humanity's 4,856th orbital launch attempt. It was the 5th GSLV flight and the 1st this year. The payload was bound for Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). 2 objects from this launch are catalogued, one of them a payload.

About this launch

INSAT-4CR was ISRO's replacement for the lost INSAT-4C, carrying Ku-band transponders for direct-to-home broadcasting. The GSLV placed it in a lower-than-planned orbit and the satellite had to use its own propellant to reach geostationary orbit.
