Launch was a Partial Failure

Summary

Galileo L3 (FOC FM01-FM02) launched on an Arianespace Soyuz STB Fregat from Soyuz Launch Complex, Guiana Space Centre, French Guiana on August 22, 2014. The mission was a partial failure: Satellites were placed into an incorrect orbit due to an anomaly with the Fregat upper stage. Both payloads recovered using their own propulsion. It was Arianespace's 224th launch, 7th this year and humanity's 5,401st orbital launch attempt. It was the 3rd Soyuz STB Fregat flight and the 2nd this year. The payload was bound for Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). 3 objects from this launch are catalogued, 2 of them payloads.

About this launch

These are the first two Full Operational Capability satellites of the Galileo constellation, ESA's satellite navigation system and is expected to be completed by 2020. Galileo will provide Europe with an alternative to the American GPS and Russian GLONASS constellations, but will be interoperable with both systems.
